The Birth of North Mountain Adventures

Where did North Mountain Adventures start?

In 2014, Craig and Melanie MacCarthy created their Outfitting Business and landed on the name “North Mountain Adventures” because they reside on the North side of Riding Mountain National Park and were determined to make each client’s trip an unforgettable adventure. They also had numerous business ideas and wanted it to be all encompassing.

They began that year with just 8 bear licenses for American clients then in 2019 expanded that to 19 and in 2023 added whitetail deer to their offerings. In 2020, amid the global shutdown, they were completing the build of their second cabin when everything stopped. With their American clients unable to cross the border the decision was made to complete the second cabin and begin the process for renting the cabins to non-hunting guests. This small vision snowballed into a four-season operation with guests now staying from all over the world!

Also, amid the global shut down, Craig convinced Mel it was the perfect time for him to focus on his dream of filming his hunting and fishing experiences and sharing them with anyone who’d watch. So, the first video camera was purchased, a YouTube channel created, and the journey began! Just 6 short months later, an unexpected phone call from a TV network asking to use the content on air. By June 2021, they had signed a contract with Wild TV – Canada’s Hunting and Fishing Network and Season 1 filming kicked into high gear! The plans and vision have evolved along the way, but Season 3 is upon us and things are looking great!

    Who We Are

    The goods on your hosts…

Craig and Melanie are proud to consider this a family show and you’ll see their children, Hayden and Kierston in various episodes. They’re also keen on inviting friends and family along and keeping things as uncut and authentic as possible.

They’re a true outdoor family, living life with old school values. In addition to all this, Craig has been working full time as a lineman with Manitoba Hydro since he was 20. He’s the main guide with their Outfitting and the main man filming and hunting for the TV show. He has a natural gift for understanding the woods and the animals in it and brings that to all his experiences. Melanie was an Occupational Therapist, leaving that career in 2018 to pursue greater passions as an entrepreneur. She’s passionate about healthy living and living life outdoors. She’s the cook, cleaner and office personnel with all three tiers of their business and volunteers her time with various school and community events. She also sits on the Executive Board for the Manitoba Lodges and Outfitters Association (MLOA).

Their children, Hayden and Kierston, are actively involved in the business and upkeep of the operation. Hayden has always had a keen interest in the outdoors, following very closely in his father’s footsteps. He’s also a keen self-taught trapper and spends much of his winter on the trap line and in his shack working. He’s an old soul, absolutely loves people and holds some of the highest rated episodes on their TV show. Kierston was born to be on a horse and spends her free time riding the trails and running the barrels. She has yet to jump into hunting with two feet but is the first to the side by side for country tours and the first with a skinning knife in hand to take care of the harvest.

Together, this crew is the perfect mix of hard work, fun and adventure.
